It’s pretty hard to say by the look of it, but these cookies are made using banana. Apparently, banana bread isn’t the only thing you can make from banana 😛
I learned banana and chocolate can make a good combination when I had one of those chocolate banana pancakes in Paris a few years back. While the regular chocolate is a bit too sweet and can add a lot of calories, these healthy chocolate banana cookies are a good snacking choice.
What makes them healthy?
These chocolate banana cookies are made using real whole foods. There’s no added sweetener and the sweetness you will get is from the banana.
These are quite filling cookies with about 285 calories and 11g of protein per serve. Good way to get some protein while satisfying your hunger.
Ingredients
Banana
Banana is the natural sweetener that I’m using in this recipe. As the ripest banana are the sweetest, choose the ripeness based on your preference on the sweetness.
Cocoa powder
I have used unsweetened cocoa powder in this recipe to keep the calories and sugar content lower. If you prefer a little bit of sweetness, get the naturally sweetened ones if you can.
Oat flour
I made the oat flour myself from the rolled oats using a blender. I like it that way as I can make the exact amount of flour I need and don’t have to worry about storing any leftover flour.
You can of course buy the oat flour if you don’t want to make your own and save a little bit of time.
Coconut oil
Coconut oil make these cookies soft, moist, and give a nice nutty flavour. This is however optional, but the cookies will be a bit dry if you don’t add it.
If you don’t have the coconut oil, olive oil or any other oil will do the job.
Protein powder
This is an optional ingredient. I added a little bit of protein powder to make the protein content of these cookies higher. Any type of protein powder should be fine. I added casein protein powder.
Chocolate chips
Chocolate chips work both ways, make the cookies look good and add some sweetness. If you want to make them even more healthier (super duper healthy 😛), add some almond flakes or raisins instead.
Baking tips to make these chocolate banana cookies
- If it’s not very hot where you live and the coconut oil is not already melted, remember to melt it before adding it to the batter. Melting it makes it easy to mix it evenly. You can melt the coconut oil using a microwave for 2 to 5 seconds or putting it in a bowl over a pot with hot water.
- If your batter becomes too thin, add a bit more oat flour and repeat it until the mixture becomes perfect.
- I prefer using an ice cream scoop to make the cookie sizes. It’s easy and makes a consistent cookie size.
